How this calculator works
Prepaid electricity is simpler than the bill makes it look. When you buy a token, the vending system takes the naira you paid and divides it by your tariff, the price of one kilowatt-hour (kWh) of energy, to decide how many units to load onto your meter. So units equal amount divided by tariff, and the only number that really matters is the tariff your band is charged. This calculator runs that division both ways: tell it the naira and it shows the units, or tell it the units you want and it shows the naira to pay.
Nigeria groups customers into service bands A to E by how many hours of supply a feeder delivers. Band A, at roughly 20 or more hours a day, pays the full cost-reflective rate, currently around ₦209.5 per kWh in most distribution companies. The lower bands are still partly subsidised, so the same top-up buys far more units there. The band chips load a representative default tariff, but the field is editable: type the exact rate from your own bill or vending receipt for a number that matches your meter, because rates differ by DISCO and move at every NERC review.
Two extras make the figure honest. The VAT toggle models vendors that deduct 7.5% before converting to units; most residential supply is exempt, so it is off by default. And if you enter your daily consumption in kWh, the result shows roughly how many days a token lasts, which is the question most people actually have when units run down faster than expected. Heavy loads like air conditioners, electric irons, kettles and water heaters are what drain a Band A meter quickest. How many units is ₦10,000 of electricity in Nigeria?
It depends entirely on your service band tariff. On Band A at about ₦209.5 per kWh, ₦10,000 buys roughly 47.7 units (kWh). On a subsidised band charging around ₦60 per kWh, the same ₦10,000 buys about 165 units. The unit count is simply the amount you pay divided by your tariff, so enter your own band rate above for an exact figure.
What is the Band A electricity tariff in 2026?
Band A customers, who are promised roughly 20 or more hours of supply a day, pay the full cost-reflective energy charge, which has sat around ₦200 to ₦225 per kWh since the 2024 review, near ₦209.5 in most DISCOs. The exact figure varies by distribution company and changes with NERC reviews, so this calculator loads a representative default that you can edit to the rate printed on your own bill.
How do I calculate prepaid meter units from naira?
Units in kWh equal the naira amount you pay divided by your tariff in naira per kWh. For example, ₦20,000 at ₦209.5 per kWh is about 95.5 units. To go the other way, multiply the units you want by the tariff: 100 units at ₦209.5 is ₦20,950. This tool does both directions and can layer on VAT if your vendor charges it.
Does prepaid electricity include VAT?
Residential energy charges under the MYTO order are generally quoted exclusive of VAT, and life-line residential supply is exempt, so most homes get the full naira amount converted to units. Some customer classes and distribution companies do add 7.5% VAT, which reduces the units a top-up buys. Use the VAT toggle to model that case; leave it off if your meter gives you units on the full amount.
Why did my prepaid units suddenly reduce?
Usually one of four things: your estate or feeder was reclassified to a higher band (most often Band A) so the tariff jumped, NERC raised the rate at a review, your vendor started deducting VAT, or the meter is recovering a debt or arrears balance and takes a slice of each top-up.
